April's Tips of the Month! Exercise tip of the month: Spring is here and if you live in Upstate NY like I do, you are probably DYING to get outside and get some fresh air! Are you having a hard time scheduling your exercise due to spring sports starting up and running around crazy carting kids to practice and games, etc...??? Well, don't fret, I have a solution for you! Instead of carving out that 45-60 minutes per day to workout, try breaking it up to meet your scheduling needs. Wake up 1/2 hour earlier each day and get a 15-20 minute jog or walk in before having to get the kids up for school. Then during lunch time, grab a co-worker and go on a nice, brisk 20 minute walk while gossiping about office politics. Have some baby wipes in your desk to freshen up after if you're worried about sweating. Then after dinner or when the day winds down, go out again for another 15-20 minute jog or walk. Don't worry about the dishes or laundry. You will get them done, you always do....You CAN DO THIS! NO EXCUSES. Nutrition tip of the month: Carbs are your friend. Really, they are. The key is to eat the right ones. If you are exercising (which you SHOULD be) you need the energy from carbs to keep your body moving and to prevent fatigue. Replace those white carbs with whole grains. Replace that white pasta with whole wheat, white rice to brown, chips to low fat popcorn, white bread to 100% whole wheat. Remember if the first ingredient has the word "enriched" in it, it's not the healthiest choice. Look for 100% whole wheat, oat, grain, etc...as the first ingredient. |
